IPI lecture - Shoshauna Gauvin, University of Waterloo / Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Waterloo, Canada

Title: Ricci Flow, Dual Affine Geometry, and Black Hole Thermodynamics

Abstract: Recent studies have demonstrated that entropy maximization can re-create classical and quantum dynamical laws akin to the principles of stationary action. This begs the question; can entropic dynamics reveal a richer structure to our universe.
This presentation will introduce established theory of Ricci Flow, the geometric process that evolves Riemannian metrics. We introduce the works of Perelman’s W-Functional, the key insight that helped resolve the Poincare Conjecture which demonstrates how to manage or resolve singularities in a Riemannian Geometry. We apply these principles to Dual Affine Geometries that demonstrate novel results regarding black hole curvature evolution and more specifically the behavior of Black Hole Thermodynamics through a Ricci-Flow like relaxation process. We will demonstrate that by using a measure of entropic time one can more rigorously derive the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structure in a Dual Affine Geometry whereby Lorentzian behavior is an emergent property without switching from an all-positive metric to a Lorentzian metric (a la Wick Rotation). In doing so we demonstrate emergent Lorentzian behavior without violating the “no-blow-up in finite time” requirements of Ricci Flow. Lastly, we will touch upon common criticism of “Physics from Fisher Information” particularly its excessive flexibility, lack of uniqueness and a lack of predictive power, providing potential avenues to more rigorously include Fisher Information as a theoretical framework.    


Speaker: Shoshauna Gauvin

BIO: Shoshauna Gauvin is a theoretical physics graduate student at the University of Waterloo in partnership with the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Canada. Prior to pursuing theoretical physics, Shoshauna served as a Captain in the Royal Canadian Air Force specializing in Signals Analysis, Cryptography, and designing and validating space weapons systems. Her background education includes an undergraduate training in Astrophysics, graduate training and research on space systems at Queen’s University and the Royal Military College of Canada, and extensive formal training in a variety of efforts from the Canadian Armed Forces. Prior to releasing from the military, she served in several senior roles including as an instructor and later director for post-undergraduate engineering training for junior officers and as the senior technical advisor (J6) for the entire Canadian mission against ISIS in Iraq. Shoshauna leverages this unique background in applying information-centric techniques to examine theoretical physics. She is particularly interested in researching Dual Affine Geometries and Entropy Maximization to explore our current theoretical deficit.
