Title: Rethinking Gravity: Can Einstein’s Equations Explain Galaxies Without Dark Matter?

Abstract: The motion of stars in galaxies suggests that there is more gravity than visible matter alone can explain. Dark matter is the usual explanation, but could the way we describe matter and gravity be leaving something important out?

In this talk, I will demonstrate how my proposed reformulation of Einstein’s equations using quantum information geometry results in equations resolving the field which we incorrectly attribute to so called "dark matter". The approach makes explicit contributions that simplified descriptions can overlook, allowing us to investigate how internal motion and pressure shape a galaxy’s gravitational profile. I will present the resulting profiles and their comparisons with galaxy observations, examining whether they can reproduce effects usually attributed to dark matter. Using intuitive examples and visual explanations, I’ll discuss the theoretical idea, the results so far, and the observations needed to distinguish these possibilities.

Speaker: Shoshauna Gauvin

Bio: Shoshauna Gauvin is a theoretical physics graduate student from the University of Waterloo, Quantum information lab. Her research explores quantum information theory, geometry, gravity, and the internal structure of matter. Her current work examines how a fuller description of matter within Einstein’s equations could account for gravitational effects usually attributed to dark matter. She combines theoretical analysis, computer simulations, and comparisons with galaxy observations to investigate the physical world.

31st of Oct. @ 17.00 London time zone. Online Teams lecture – a link will be emailed to the IPI members for the follow up Q&A session.
