EU, US or UN don't have nor use the energy(information) needed to function - Arend van Campen

 Information is a real substance. It is not only a message, something you may know or read in a paper, argues Arend van Campen. In this interview he explains what this means: "we can measure and map the information quality and quantity in man-made systems and predict if they can function and perform fully. This means that the EU, US, the UN will cease to exist in their current form, because they cause harm due to an information deficit".

IPI lecture - Prof. Andrei Khrennikov, Linnaeus University, Sweden

Title: Modelling social lasing by using the mathematical formalism of quantum theory

Abstract: During the last years our society was permanently disturbed by the coherent information waves of high amplitudes. These are waves of huge social energy. Often, they are of the destructive character, a kind of information tsunami. But they can carry as well positive improvements in the human society, as waves of decision making matching rational recommendations of societal institutes. The main distinguishing features of these waves are their high amplitude, coherence (homogeneous character of social actions generated by them), and short time needed for their generation and relaxation.

We show that such social phenomenon can be modelled on the basis of the recently developed social laser theory [1-4]. This theory can be used to model stimulated amplification of coherent social actions. ``Actions” are treated very generally, from mass protests to votes and other collective decisions, as, e.g., acceptance (often unconscious) of some societal recommendations. We point to the main distinguishing features of the modern society simplifying social lasing:

a)   transformation of humans into social atoms - loss of individuality and increase of indistinguishability;

b) generation by mass-media of powerful information fields leading to information overload of social atoms;

c)  creation of powerful social resonators based on internet Echo Chambers Functioning of internet based social resonators leads to increase of the power of the quantum information field as well as its coherence;

We stress that social laser is a part of the extended project on applications of the formalism of quantum theory outside of physics, quantum-like modelling. This terminology was invented to distinguish this modelling from attempts to reduce human consciousness, cognition, and consequently behavior to genuine quantum physical processes in the brain (e.g., by Ricciardi, Umezawa, Penrose, Hameroff, Vittiello). Nowadays, the mathematical formalism and the methodology of quantum theory are widely used in psychology, decision making, cognitive, social, and political sciences, game theory, economics and finance.

IPI lecture - Prof. Bormashenko Edward, Ariel University, Israel

Title: Fibonacci Sequences, Symmetry and Order in Biological Patterns, Their Sources, Information Origin and the Landauer Principle

Abstract: Physical, informational roots, exemplifications and consequences of periodic and aperiodic ordering (represented by Fibonacci series) in biological systems are discussed. The physical, informational and biological roots and role of symmetry and asymmetry appearing in biological patterns are addressed. A generalization of the Curie–Neumann principle as applied to biological objects is presented, briefly summarized as: “asymmetry is what creates a biological phenomenon”. The “top-down” and “bottom-up” approaches to the explanation of symmetry in organisms are presented and discussed in detail. The “top-down” approach implies that the symmetry of the biological structure follows the symmetry of the media in which this structure is functioning; the “bottom-up” approach, in turn, accepts that the symmetry of biological structures emerges from the symmetry of molecules constituting the structure. A diversity of mathematical measures applicable for quantification of order in biological patterns is introduced. The continuous, Shannon and Voronoi measures of symmetry/ordering and their application to biological objects are addressed. The fine structure of the notion of “order” is discussed. Informational/algorithmic roots of order inherent in the biological systems are considered. Ordered/symmetrical patterns provide an economy of biological information, necessary for the algorithmic description of a biological entity. The application of the Landauer principle bridging physics and theory of information to the biological systems is discussed. Typical sizes of biological cells arise from informational reasons.

BIO: Edward Bormashenko was born in Kharkov, former USSR, in 1962. He earned his MSc in Physics in Kharkov University; Thesis: Interaction of heavy high energy ions with thin gold films. Professor Bormashenko earned his PhD in  1990 in Polymer Science Moscow Institute of Plastics (USSR). The PhD was supervised by Professor M. Friedman. In 1997 he immigrated to Israel. Currently he is leading the Laboratory of Interface Science, founded in 1998 in Ariel University. His is an author of three monographs, more than 300 peer reviewed papers and 14 patents.

I am working mainly in the field of surface science, in particular in the fields of wetting phenomena, superhydrophobicity, superoleophobicity, ice-phobicity, interfacial crystallization, creating of surfaces with pre-scribed properties, plasma- and UV-treatment of surfaces. My laboratory also works in the field of plasma treatment of seeds and other biological objects. We also study liquid marbles and their self-propulsion. Last year we started to study the Moses effect (magnetically inspired deformation of liquid surfaces) and its applications. I am also interested in foundations of thermodynamics, informational interpretation of thermodynamics (the Landauer Principle),  theory of symmetry, Ramsey theory, quantitative linguistics, topological problems of physics (examplifications of the “hairy ball theorem”), advanced dimensional analysis (extensions of the Buckingham theorem), variational analysis of "free ends" physical problems, enabling application of the "transversality conditions" of variational problems. Last year we started to develop metamaterials exploiting liquid marbles.

IPI Quest ♔

Hello IPI Fellows,

I wanted to share with you some thoughts re: the simulation hypothesis and the role of information in the universe:

THE INTERDISCIPLINARY ISSUE

  • The modern transmission of knowledge is closely linked to economic and commercial political utilitarianism
  • For reasons that we are not interested in discussing here, hyper specialization is preferred to multidisciplinarity
  • The evolution of the various disciplines has had an uncoordinated development
  • Only some of these disciplines have (and have had) tools that can get to discard a theory in a fraction of the time required to the others
  • One in particular dealt with develop tools and at the same time investigate the relationship between the emerging reality and the most fundamental measure of information on our plane: 0|1
  • GPT-* & similar.. start to show deep vertical knowledge and inimaginable synthesis.. even if it was not AGI..
  • We should promote the "re-sync" of the disciplines and use those new tools to quicken the time required to falsify an hypothesis
  • ...luckily, IPI is the right place to be

 

THE BRAIN / REALITY ISSUE

  • I suspect we are into a function emerging hierarchical universe (The Onion 🧅) hence the simulation could be multi-level
  • I suspect we are spending so much effort in investigating on our emergent plane but we should start deflecting brain power to the core of the onion
  • All the biases might come from the essence of "understanding", that's might be on the same existential plane of a rock hitting another
  • "understanding" might be a process in time where from a network of things we encode prefrontex and limbic dictionaries to a new function (that we'd like to be considered an upper layer, call it religion, call it scientist pride :-) )
  • but time might be  emergent as space
  • I'm pretty convinced we need a paradigm shift to really investigate the core.. taking some of time we spend in investigating the surface of the onion
  • ...again, IPI is the right place to be
 

THE EVIDENCE ISSUE

  • even if we find a compass to aim at the core of the onion, we don't have anymore the concept known as  "understanding" (considering that it may be subjective so not comparable between each of us)
  • we are pondering the whole, so axioms are not enough, cause of Godel's
  • the new Understanding needs to be directly linked with the core (idk maybe it needs to be the substrate and its function at the same time, at the same hierarchical level, who knows)
  • the evidence could be in a new form that we could not imagine yet (the evidence could be a paradox in the emergent reality to trigger some changes in the real one.. a sort of seismograph into the core)
  • ..surprise..IPI is the right place to be
 

THE WHICH SIMULATION? ISSUE

  • The are so many nouances to the simulation hypotesis
    • Intentional as per Descartes/Putnam, all the Movies, Religions, Drugs, .. and we just need to find the intent
    • Autodidactic as per https://arxiv.org/abs/2104.03902..
    • Intentional+Autodidactic: our emergent reality is simulated with intent and using just a few subset of available attributes from the core, the rest is where the simulant is concelead
    • The self-simulation with/without intent, just happens
  • ...but again, we are in the right place!

IPI Easter lecture - Neuromorphic Computing: from theory to practice, by Prof. Vitaly Vanchurin

Title: Neuromorphic Computing: from theory to practice

Abstract: There are billions of billions of organisms that are currently deployed on the planet Earth. All of them came into existence by the process known as biological evolution and all of them are constantly preforming certain information processing or computational tasks. For all practical purposes these organisms can be considered as computers, but what is exactly their architecture? Do they have the classical von Neumann architecture or is there something else that we can identify and, perhaps, use for developing better computers? Do they use quantum effects or quantum computation, or all such effects are irrelevant for computations performed on the macroscopic scales of individual organisms? In this talk, I will describe the recent theoretical advances in physics, biology and machine learning that could lead to the development of a new generation of neuromorphic computers.

BIO: Vitaly Vanchurin graduated from a famous math high school, #57, in Moscow. He won a science competition and received a full scholarship to attend Suffolk University in Boston. After graduation, he entered graduate school at Tufts University, where he defended his doctoral dissertation on cosmic strings. Then he worked at the University of Munich and Stanford University on the theory of cosmological inflation and quantum cosmology. 
 
He received a professorship from the University of Minnesota, where he continued his work on quantum gravity and developed the physical theory of neural networks. In the last two years, he worked at the National Institutes of Health, where he developed a physical approach to the theory of biological evolution, and recently founded Artificial Neural Computing company to conduct research at the intersection of physics, biology, and machine learning.

Well, here I am - a new member of Information Physics Institute (since yesterday). Thanks to Theo for nominating me and to Melvin for the email invitation. I suppose some kind of introduction of myself might be a good idea.

 
My main pastime is writing my ideas about science as it may be in the future. I'm not a professional scientist but am a member of the science websites ResearchGate and ORCID. I’ve earned Certificates in Astrophysics from ANU (Australian National University), and Certificates in Robotics from QUT (Queensland University of Technology, Australia). Though I put a lot of hard work into my writing, I can't take all the credit. I believe that the whole universe - everything on Earth and in space plus everything in the past, present, and future - is entangled and unified. Everybody is part of this unity, so all information is available to anybody.  My hobbies include reading, writing, computers and the Internet, TV, music, and regular light exercise.

IPI sounds fascinating. I've had a look at the website including some articles and videos. I do feel a bit disturbed about the statement that there is no dark matter. The claim that the universe's extra mass is accounted for by information possessing mass is no doubt true, but I suspect the info's mass would only partly account for the extra. Besides adding to the mass of the known universe, the information would produce other large-scale dimensions which interact with our familiar ones - and they'd possess what we call "dark" matter. The dark matter would be produced by dark energy (just as E=mc^2 connects ordinary matter with ordinary energy). This means dark energy would not have a role in expansion of the universe. An article which I wrote and posted on ResearchGate a few months ago goes into these matters and uses topology plus "readshift" - (re)tarded (ad)vanced redshift - to explain that the cosmos is static, never expanding or contracting as a whole.

IPI Spring talk: Beyond the veil of common sense - A logical view of nature, by Trevor Page

Title: Beyond the veil of common sense - A logical view of nature

Abstract:

A simple deduced model of common sense and the process of “making sense” is presented. The limitations of common sense and specific reasons for those limitations are explained.Several examples of irrationality due to common sense bias are identified within the fields of mathematics, science, philosophy, and religion. A series of logical proofs for the origin of the universe and its fundamental quantum nature are delivered. Each logical proof is also sensibly analysed and deemed nonsensical, further illuminating the inequivalence of common sense and logic. In accordance with the assumption that nature is ultimately logical, a new form of mathematics is necessarily introduced, wherein value is conserved.Preliminary expressions of the universe are developed (relative expressions of |1|), revealing what are purported to be the foundational quantum informational structures of nature. These structures, of which there are apparently 72! instances, are presumed to underpin and support the standard model, either as it currently stands, or at least future revisions of it. As such the purported structures are characterised and categorised in a manner conducive to a forthcoming mapping. Quantum superposition, entanglement and probability are shown to be natural requirements of logic. Finally, suggestions for further work are given.

Bio: Trevor Page, now age 51, was born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. He spent his entire childhood and most of his teenage years there. He was not often far away from synthesizers, guitars, soldering irons or computers, such as his Sinclair ZX81, BBC model B and his school’s network of Link 480Zs.

For a short period, he became fascinated by self-derived recursive algorithms which produced images resembling simple organisms and patterns found in nature. He was kindly sent by his maths teacher to an early lecture on the Mandelbrot set.

Trevor enjoyed obtaining a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Surrey and subsequently worked for the MoD / DERA, inventing and trialling novel non-lethal RF weapon systems.

He subsequently settled in Alberta, Canada (1997) and worked for Nortel Networks, developing key technology and patents for high power RF amplifiers and radio equipment used in cellular base stations.

Trevor currently works for Baker Hughes, designing electronics, acoustic telemetry downhole tools, etc. He continues to innovate, frequently generating trade secrets, new simulation methods / tools and valuable IP.

His favourite activities include helping people to record and produce their own original music, inventing / designing / collaborative problem solving, and perhaps most of all, deeply pondering the nature of things whenever there are quiet moments.

Trevor has two children aged 17 and 21 who constantly amaze him with their ever-increasing abilities and insights.
